All ebooks purchased from the Monsoon website, including all ebooks bundled free with paperback books, are DRM free and are stored in your ‘My Account’ area for unlimited download to any device anywhere in the world.
DRM (Digital Rights Management) is a kind of ebook access control and is used by publishers to try and prevent ebooks from being pirated, and in the case of some device retailers to lock readers into using a particular e-reader. At Monsoon Books we have made the decision to follow other progressive independent imprints – Profile, Verso, Tor (Macmillan) and Pottermore to name a few – and apply social DRM instead of strict DRM to our ebooks. When you buy a Monsoon ebook, your name and email and date of purchase appears inside the ebook, on the Ex Libris page and in a Disclaimer page at the end of the book. Your purchase transaction code is also watermarked into the ebook, invisible to you but traceable by Monsoon. By using social DRM we want to enable you to read your ebook on any or all of your e-reading devices. In accordance with our Terms & Conditions, you can’t upload our ebooks to websites or file-sharing networks, but we want to enable you to share an ebook with a friend or family member as you would a paperback.
After you purchase an ebook (or a paperback bundled with a free ebook), the MOBI file (Kindle and Kindle app compatible) and EPUB file (compatible with everything else) will remain available in the ‘My Account’ area for multiple downloads. Download links may also be found on your email receipt of purchase from Monsoon Books.
To read the publisher’s full rant on DRM, see ‘Monsoon goes DRM-free‘.
If you have a Kindle, you can download the MOBI file and email it to your Kindle device. You will have a Send-to-Kindle email address ending in kindle.com (it can be found at the Manage your Devices page on Amazon UK or Amazon US). If you haven’t previously done so, you will need to authorize your own email address to be able to send ebooks to yourself at Amazon UK or Amazon US. Then simply email the MOBI file as an attachment to your Kindle email address and the book will appear on your Kindle. (You can also use this email to send many other types of documents to yourself that you might want on your Kindle.)
If you purchase an ebook from Monsoon on the smartphone or tablet on which you have the Kindle app installed then click on the download link for the MOBI file and your phone or tablet will prompt you to select ‘Open in Kindle’.
iPhone or iPad
Purchase an ebook from Monsoon on your iPad or iPhone and you can click on the download link for the EPUB file and then select ‘Open in iBooks’ (if you don’t have iBooks installed, download it for free from the AppStore) or, if you have another e-reader installed, then open it in your preferred e-reader. If you have the Kindle app installed on your iPhone or iPad, you can also click on the download link for the MOBI file and select ‘Open in Kindle’.
Android smartphone or tablet
Purchase an ebook from Monsoon on your Android smartphone or tablet and you should be able to click on the download link for the EPUB file and then open the book on your favourite pre-installed e-reader. If you have the Kindle app installed, you can also click on the download link for the MOBI file and select ‘Open in Kindle’.
E-readers: Kobo, Nook, Sony
Simply download the EPUB file to your desktop and side load the book onto your e-reader.
On a Mac, download the EPUB file and it will open in iBooks. For Windows users, you will first need to download an ebook-reading program, such as Adobe Digital Editions. Once installed, you can download and open the EPUB file.
